Lubricating oil additives are vital chemical compounds added to lubricating
oils to impart specific properties to the finished oils. Additives, in
improving the performance characteristics of lubricating oils, have aided
significantly in the development of improved prime movers and industrial machinery.
Nearly
all commercial motor oils contain additives, whether the oils are synthetic or petroleum
based. Modern passenger car engines, automatic transmissions, hypoid gears,
railroad and marine diesel engines, high speed gas and steam turbines, and
industrial processing machinery, as well as many other types of equipment,
would have been greatly retarded in their development were it not for additives
and the performance benefits they provide.
The
manufacturer of many different oils can utilize the same base oils for each
formulation and can choose different additives for each specific application.
Components
We
usually call lubricant components "single additive" in Chinese
meaning, they could be used to meet some specific requirements of the oils.
1. To control chemical breakdown
◎ Detergent additives are used to clean and neutralize oil impurities which would normally cause
deposits (oil sludge) on the engine parts. The typical products in
Anneng are as follows:
LD-04 Lowbased Synthetic Calcium Sulfonate(TBN 20-50)
LD-05 Middlebased Synthetic Calcium Sulfonate(TBN 145)
LD-06 Overbased Synthetic Calcium Sulfonate(TBN 295)
LD-6S Overbased Synthetic Calcium Sulfonate(TBN 400)
LD-15B Calcium Sulfurized Alkyl Phenate
◎ Corrosion or rust inhibitors retard the oxidation of metal
inside an engine. The typical products in Anneng are as follows:
ZDDP
series:
Rust
inhibitors:
◎ Antioxidants retard
the degradation of the stock oil by oxidation. The typical products in Anneng
are as follows:
◎ Metal
deactivators create a film on metal surfaces to prevent the metal from causing
the oil to be oxidized. The typical products in Anneng are as follows:
2. For viscosity
◎Viscosity Index Improvers make oil’s viscosity higher at
elevated temperatures, improving its viscosity index (VI). This combats the
tendency of the oil to become thin at high temperature. Most multi-grade oils have Viscosity Index
Improvers. Some synthetic oils are engineered to meet multi-grade
specifications without them. The typical products in Anneng are the series
products of OCP,PMA.
OCP
series:
PMA
◎Pour point depressants improve the oil's ability to flow at lower
temperatures. The typical products in Anneng are as follows:
3.For lubricity
◎ Friction modifiers or friction reducers, like organic molybdenum compound, are used for increasing fuel economy by reducing friction
between moving parts. Friction modifiers alter the lubricity of the base oil.
Whale oil was used historically. The typical products in Anneng are as follows:
◎ Extreme pressure agents bond to metal surfaces, keeping them
from touching even at high pressure. Antiwear additives or wear inhibiting
additives cause a film to surround metal parts, helping to keep them separated.
The typical products in Anneng are as follows:
Zinc
dialkyldithiophosphate or zinc dithiophosphates are typically used.
4.For contaminant control
◎ Dispersants keep contaminants (e.g. soot) suspended in the oil to
prevent them from coagulating. The typical products in Anneng are as follows:
Additive Packages
As
we know, the base oils could not have only one performance when formulating the
lubricating oils, so we need one product which could meet almost all-purpose functions
for the oils. The additive package is the product that could be used directly
without adding other functional components, and could meet the requirements for
API quality grades. It is the trend of the developments of lubricants and is
full of professional technology, what's more, it is more economical.
